Burkina Faso has signed and ratified investment promotion and mutual protection agreements with Germany, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union, Guinea, Ghana, Benin, Comoros, South Korea, Mauritania, Morocco, Taiwan and Tunisia.
2) Transparency of the Regulatory System
- prices are regulated to ensure a fair competition and good business climate for investors
- civil law and part of OHADA
3) Investment Incentives
The 2018 investment code demonstrates the government’s interest in attracting FDI to create industries that produce export goods and provide training and jobs for its domestic workforce. The code provides standardized guarantees to all legally established firms operating in Burkina Faso, whether foreign or domestic. It contains five investment and operations preference schemes, which are equally applicable to all investments, mergers, and acquisitions.
Under the investment code, all personal and legal entities lawfully established in Burkina Faso, both local and foreign, are entitled to the following rights: fixed property, forest and industrial rights, concessions, administrative authorizations, access to permits, and participation in state contracts.
4) Capital Markets and Portfolio Investment
The government of Burkina Faso is more focused on attracting FDI and concessionary lending for development than it is on developing its capital markets. Net portfolio inflows were estimated at around 0.1 percent of GDP in 2017, while FDI was about 2.9 percent, according to Standard & Poor’s. While the government does issue some sovereign bonds to raise capital in the WAEMU regional bond market, in general the availability of different kinds of investment instruments is extremely limited.
5- Corruption
Transparency International indicates that corruption remains a problem. Burkina Faso ranked 78th out of 180 on Transparency International’s 2018 Corruption Perception Index. The main challenges the country currently faces are poor access to information, a weak judiciary, limited enforcement powers of anti-corruption institutions, misappropriation of public funds, and the lack of an effective separation of powers.

Burkina Faso To Impose Higher Royalties On Foreign Companies For Gold Production - Under the previous regime, the royalty rate was set at 5% for all gold production, irrespective of the prevailing market conditions. However, the new rates reflect a more dynamic and responsive strategy:
The minimum royalty rate has been increased to 6% for gold spot prices above $1,500 per ounce, representing a 1% increase from the previous rate.
Further adaptation to the changing market dynamics is evident in the 6.5% royalty rate, which is applicable when gold spot prices range from $1,700 to $2,000 per ounce.
For the upper echelons of the gold market, where prices exceed $2,000 per ounce, the royalty rate has been set at 7%, demonstrating a 2% increase from the old rate.
These revisions underscore Burkina Faso's commitment to optimizing the collection of royalties from its gold mining industry, ensuring that the nation can better weather market fluctuations and external challenges.
Burkina Faso, a West African gold-producing nation facing a challenging economic landscape, has introduced a revision in its mining code to adapt to the realities of decreased gold production. This strategic decision aims to enhance revenue collection and fiscal stability during a period marked by deteriorating security conditions and political instability.
The modified royalty rates now contrast with the previous structure, signifying a noteworthy change in the government's approach to managing its gold mining sector

10 Small Scale Business Ideas & Opportunities in Burkina Faso, Africa | Start Small and Medium-Sized Businesses in Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso may not be high on your list of places to start a business, but it’s worth looking into. The World Bank’s Doing Business 2013 report ranked Burkina Faso as 46th out of 183 countries for ease of doing business, and GEM 2010 reported that only 5 percent of its population is unemployed. Small businesses can go far here, with little formal regulation or restrictions on home-based operations. Burkina Faso has low electricity costs, low transportation costs and no taxes on businesses owned by foreign investors. Burkina Faso is one of Africa’s fastest growing economies with annual growth averaging 5% since 2000. With its strategic location, landlocked between Côte d’Ivoire and Mali, it has access to abundant natural resources and produces cotton, gold, manganese and uranium. Recent discoveries of offshore oil reserves could prove to be another driver for economic growth over coming years.

BURKINA FASO | How MSF is responding to a mental health crisis among displaced people
More than one million people have been displaced by growing violence in Burkina Faso. The events they have gone through or witnessed have left many people with deep psychological scars.
To ease their suffering, MSF started mental health activities in the Eastern region at the end of 2019.
Our team provides support through individual, family and group counselling sessions, where mental health specialists focus on coping mechanisms and building resilience.
For people who have recently experienced a traumatic event, they are offered "psychological first aid", a technique designed to reduce the onset of possible psychological trauma.

What’s Happening in Burkina Faso?
Months of tension and protests in Burkina Faso culminated in a military takeover on Monday, January 24. The political crisis adds to an already fragile context characterized by an ongoing conflict. For more than a decade, the central Sahel region—principally Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso—has seen conflict between armed groups, government, and international forces. The fighting has created a serious humanitarian crisis with large-scale displacement and many people struggle to find food, water, shelter, and medical care.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are providing food, clean water, maternity and child care, and malaria treatment but more help is needed. “People are living in very precarious situations,” said MSF coordinator Youssouf Dembélé. “[People are] oft...

Burkina Faso's leader, Ibrahim Traore, has reduced hospital fees to ease the burden on citizens.
Captain Ibrahim Traore, the leader of Burkina Faso, has taken decisive action to address the high costs of healthcare services in the country. In a recent announcement, he declared that the government will significantly lower the prices of medical examinations and procedures from the end of April. This measure is aimed at alleviating the financial burden on the population, which has long been struggling to access affordable healthcare.
The government's decision to reduce the prices of medical examinations and procedures is a bold move that will have a profound impact on the lives of many Burkinabe people. Access to healthcare services has been a major challenge for the population, particularly those living in rural areas. By reducing the prices of these services, the government is taking ...

Burkina Faso: Investing in Health and Nutrition to Save and Improve Lives
In 2016, the government of Burkina Faso introduced free health care for pregnant women and children under five, and it recently committed to increasing its spending on health from 11% to 15% of its budget. These changes are helping increase the number of people visiting health facilities, but progress on key issues like nutrition and family planning is lagging. To address these challenges, in 2018, the government started working with the Global Financing Facility to improve access to maternal, child and adolescent health services to provide better quality health care to its citizens.

Bringing Malnourished Children Back to Health in Burkina Faso
Rising levels of insecurity in Burkina Faso have pushed nearly 2 million people out of their homes. Child malnutrition rates are on the rise as well.
Aminata Zabré, Head of Nutrition at the UNICEF-supported Sector 6 health center in the district of Kaya, north central Burkina Faso, treated approximately 100 children per year for acute malnutrition ten years ago. In the first quarter of 2022 alone, that number jumped to more than 600.
Leading a tour of the crowded center, Zabré says, "We found many, many malnourished children, malnourished breastfeeding mothers and malnourished pregnant women. Today, we have many new cases that we will treat."
Zabré and her team use Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to bring acutely malnourished children back to health. RUTF, a nutritious, shelf-sta...

More than one million people have been displaced by growing violence in Burkina Faso. The events they have gone through or witnessed have left many people with deep psychological scars.
To ease their suffering, MSF started mental health activities in the Eastern region at the end of 2019.

“[People are] often in camps exposed to bad weather, which increases waterborne diseases like malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections.” Read more at https://bit.ly/3G7GYzF

By reducing the prices of these services, the government is taking concrete steps to address this issue and ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare.
This new policy will be a game-changer for the people of Burkina Faso. It will significantly reduce the financial burden on families and make healthcare services more accessible to all. This will not only improve the health outcomes of the population but also contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of the country.

RUTF, a nutritious, shelf-stable peanut paste, comes in single-serving sachets that cost about 35 cents each. UNICEF is by far the largest supplier of RUTF for acutely malnourished children in Burkina Faso.
RUTF is "full, full, full of calories, and it provides energy, and it helps the children recover from severe malnutrition," says Zabré.
UNICEF and partners are aiming to reach hundreds of thousands of acutely malnourished children with RUTF treatment in Burkina Faso this year. Supply of RUTF has been uninterrupted in previous years, but with the growing number of children and rising prices of therapeutic food, UNICEF needs additional resources to make sure no malnourished child is left behind.
